Samer Choucair: Morocco Presents a New Model in Global Financial Innovation

Investment leader Samer Choucair stated that the economic landscape forming in Morocco—where the OCP Group headquarters stands with its modern design as a facade for clear developmental ambition—does not merely represent local progress. Instead, it reflects a strategic transformation in African financial markets. Choucair added that Morocco’s success in raising $1.5 billion through the first-ever international hybrid bond issuance by an African company represents a pivotal moment in the continent’s financial history.

Details of the Historic Issuance Shaking Global Markets

Samer Choucair explained that the issuance by OCP Group, the world’s largest producer of phosphate and fertilizers, saw extraordinary demand. He noted that subscription orders reached approximately $7 billion, or more than 4.6 times the issuance size, reflecting strong global confidence in the Moroccan model.

Choucair added that the issuance consisted of two tranches:

  • $1 Billion Tranche: With a yield of 6.74%, callable in 2031.

  • $500 Million Tranche: With a yield of 7.37%, callable in 2036.

The investment leader pointed out that directing these proceeds to fund an ambitious investment program and improve the capital structure strengthens OCP’s position as a pivotal player in global food security.

A Qualitative Leap for African Financial Markets

Choucair stated: “OCP’s hybrid issuance is not just a financing tool; it is a sophisticated model that combines the stability of traditional bonds with the flexibility of modern financial instruments.” He added that the high demand from 176 investors across 23 countries confirms that African companies are now capable of attracting international capital on competitive terms.

For Gulf investors, this presents a strategic opportunity to enter vital sectors such as food security, renewable energy, and minerals. Choucair asserted that Morocco provides a practical model for transforming natural resources into sustainable economic power through financial innovation.

Why Does This Issuance Matter to Saudi and Gulf Investors?

Samer Choucair explained that the significance of this issuance stems from its alignment with economic diversification goals in the Kingdom. He noted that Gulf investors today are searching for opportunities outside traditional markets, and this issuance provides an ideal gateway.

Choucair added that opportunities center around three main areas:

  1. Food Security: As phosphate is an essential element in supporting global food chains.

  2. Development of Innovative Financial Tools: Opening the door for sustainable and hybrid bonds within the Gulf.

  3. Expansion into Africa: Which has become a promising market rather than just a high-risk region.

Choucair indicated that Morocco specifically represents a strategic entry point due to its stability and extensive trade agreements.

2026 Economic Trends: The Gulf Heads South

Choucair stated that 2026 investment trends indicate a clear shift toward emerging markets. He explained that the OCP issuance reflects Africa’s attractiveness as a growing investment destination, especially in energy, mining, and manufacturing. He added that Vision 2030 drives Saudi investors to think globally, confirming that investing in instruments like hybrid bonds provides attractive yields alongside a positive impact on sustainable development.

The Time for Strategic Movement

Samer Choucair concluded by saying: “What we are witnessing in Morocco is not just a financial deal, but the beginning of a new phase of economic partnerships between the Gulf and Africa.” He added that OCP’s success sends a clear message: great opportunities appear in markets that combine resources with innovation. Choucair asserted that 2026 will be a decisive year, and those who move smartly now will build a strong position on the global investment map.
